Location!

We found it! We are signing a lease this month for the Wild Onion Market retail location. There will be a big announcement for our Owners later in January, and for the public and press shortly thereafter. Make sure you have the first insider scoop! Join now at https://wildonionmarket.com/become-an-owner/. Our architect and store designers have visited the site and given it a big thumbs up. Our hope is to open the store in 2022. To start construction, we need capital, which means we need you to invest in your co-op and help us spread the word!

Have you heard? We’re almost ready to start the Capital Campaign to fund our very own Wild Onion Market. This is the most exciting time in the co-op’s history, and everyone can participate in building the store. Read on for answers to some of your burning questions about the Capital Campaign.

Why does Wild Onion Market need to conduct a Capital Campaign?

The short answer is that we need to have the funds to build the store. But also, co-ops have a unique legal structure that allows us to raise capital from Owners through Preferred Shares, Owner Loans, and tax-deductible donations. Food co-ops generally raise at least 50% of their capital funds from Owners. Capital from Owners is less costly and more flexible than bank financing, and it allows Owners the opportunity to exercise the co-operative principle of Economic Participation. The opportunity to invest in our local food system to build a more ethical, resilient, and sustainable food supply is a unique opportunity for our community.

Where will the money come from?

Some money may come from a bank loan, grants, or non-profit lending funds. But before we can secure commercial funding, we need to demonstrate that our whole community is behind us by raising funds from our Owners. That means that Owner investment in the Capital Campaign is the key to opening the doors.

What will the money do?

Investments will fund construction, hire staff, purchase equipment, and stock the shelves. We will strive to spend much of this money locally so that our market starts to benefit the community right now.

If I’m not an Owner yet, where do I come in?

If you haven’t joined as an Owner yet, you are still part of our community. You can spread the word about us and will be able to shop at the co-op when it opens. There are two things you can do right now to help get us there faster:

1) You can join Wild Onion Market today. The more Owners we have, the stronger we are.

2) You can also make a tax-deductible donation to the Capital Campaign. Scroll down and choose Wild Onion Market as the recipient of your gift. While only Owners have the opportunity to invest in the co-op, anyone can donate and help us build the store.

If you have more questions about the Capital Campaign, email invest@wildonionmarket.com. If you’d like to volunteer with us from March through May on this exciting project, email ann@wildonionmarket.com. Get ready to fund the market so we can bring more local, sustainable food to our area!

Co-op Board Elections

Wild Onion Market‘s annual Board elections are coming up in February. As an Owner, you can participate in elections in two ways: Run for office, and vote. Of 9 total seats, we will be electing 4 Board members: 3 Board terms come to an end this year (3-year terms); and, we have 1 additional open seat. Incumbents may run for re-election.

We welcome new people, ideas and perspectives on the Board! Members elected this year will very likely oversee the opening of our market, the transition to working with a general manager, and new ways for the Board to govern. It’s a very exciting time to join the Board!

Eligibility to run: All Owners over the age of 18 who have been Owners since August 6, 2021 (6 months before elections open), can run. Board members cannot have any conflict of interest with the co-op.

Eligibility to vote: Be an Owner in good standing. Every Owner gets one vote that will help shape our leadership. If you’re not already an Owner, join now so you can have a say in the future of your local co-op.

If you are wondering about Board member activities, or would like an application, please contact Board Secretary Lisa J. Gordon at lisa.gordon@wildonioinmarket.com. Also consider joining our Board Recruitment Committee! Contact Lisa if interested.

Applications to run for the Board are due by Friday, January 28, at midnight.

Elections will open on Sunday, February 6 and run through Sunday, February 20 only! Owners, watch your email for a message from Wild Onion Market via electionrunner.com. You will need the unique voter ID and voter key contained in that message in order to vote securely on the elections platform.

Also, mark your calendar now for the 2022 Wild Onion Market Annual Meeting and Capital Campaign Kick-off on Sunday, March 6, at 1:00 PM via Zoom. Get ready for the next phase of the co-op’s development and plan to join us then!
