| As many of you may know, Hurricane Helene has devastated the southern east coast significantly impacting our fellow co-ops, French Broad Food Co-op (Asheville, NC), Hendersonville Community Co-op (Hendersonville, NC) and Daily Grocery Co-op (Athens, GA). Currently, we are aware of various impacts including power, internet, and inventory shortages affecting these co-ops. We also know some co-op staff have been personally impacted by property damage and loss. Affected communities are in a state of survival and shock, which means it may be some time before damage can be fully assessed.
The National Co+op Grocers (NCG), where we’re a member owner, have reached out to us about how to help co-ops impacted by Hurricane Helene. In partnership with the Cooperative Development Foundation (CDF), NCG has set up a matching donation campaign through CDF’s Disaster Recovery Fund to support these members and their staff. If you can, donate today and NCG will match up to $100,000 in donations made through this link through October 31. |

| As part of national Co-Op month, we continue to spotlight the co-ops we carry in store. This week we want to shout-out, Chicago Cane Cooperative (CCC)! They craft rum-based spirits to introduce drinkers to flavors they may not have experienced before. With a deep passion for rum, their mission is to showcase the diverse varieties and complex flavors this spirit can offer. Inspired by the founder’s Cuban heritage, CCC also educates consumers about rum’s often overlooked history.
As a cooperative, CCC believes that shared involvement in the workplace and business trajectory is essential for their success. This transparency fosters equity for workers and gives consumers peace of mind. They are committed to creating a healthy and prosperous environment for everyone through worker ownership.
Their vision is to establish Chicago’s first worker cooperative distillery and tasting room. Currently, they are partnering with Two Eagles Distillery, which shares its equipment with CCC to produce their rum and strengthen connections with consumers, restaurants, and retailers.
