Ownership and investment growth continue to keep good momentum. We have applied for multiple City permits. There are two great events this weekend – join us! Read on for details.

Not yet an Owner? Now is the time! Purchase a one-time only Owner share for $250 per household/business. To make ownership more affordable, we have various accessibility options, including monthly installments starting at $10, and a scholarship program. Read more about Wild Onion Market.

Are you able to make an investment to help the store open more quickly? See details and options here.

Wild Onion Market Events

One of the best things about joining a co-op is that we are constantly having fun, engaging and meaningful events. Be in the know about new events! Subscribe to our Facebook or Instagram.

July 23: Blueberry Picking, 8 AM-4 PM. Cam Davis and Katelyn Varhely (Owners #1068) of North Sky Farm in South Haven, MI, are generously hosting co-op volunteers to pick blueberries for our July 24th Sneak Peek event. We’re looking for a few more volunteers to pick blueberries for the day. Get out of the city, learn about a working farm, take home some blueberries, and have a chance to spend the day with fellow cooperators. Please email Board Director and organizer of this event, Ryan Azark, at ryan@wildonionmarket.com for details and to sign up. 🫐
July 24: Wild Onion Market Sneak Peek #3, 3-5 PM. Join us to explore the future market space, meet other co-opers, pick up swag to show your co-op pride, and share snacks. Each new Owner will get a pint of – you guessed it – blueberries! Plus, everyone in attendance will be entered to win blueberries to take home (which freeze very well for later use). Also sample and learn about our SumAction beer collaboration, brewed by Sketchbook Brewery. This will be the last Sneak Peek before construction rehab begins in August, so bring your friends to sign up and join!  7007 N. Clark St, Chicago.

7007 N. Clark Update

We’re moving forward! We’re working with Rebuilding Warehouse to remove unneeded items from the store. Our demolition permit has been submitted and we plan to start demolition in early August. Our architect is finalizing the exterior design of the store and we hope to submit the permitting package to the City by the end of next week. Our HVAC system has been ordered along with a refrigeration unit. And, we have submitted our application for our business and liquor license to the City!
We will start construction as soon as we get the City’s approval, assuming we have the capital to move forward. This depends on you – no need to wait until the fall capital campaign! If you are interested in investing, please see details and options here, or contact invest@wildonionmarket.com.

Food Politics Corner

1. LOCAL/STATE:
New food growing collaborative is seeking first director.
Caveat: Although director reports to Advisory Board, no Advisory Board is listed on website. Organizational partners (many well known) are listed, but no responsible individuals. Lack of transparency is always a red flag. Best to ask questions ahead of time.
2. REGIONAL (Midwest) / N. AMERICA
Ask Me Anything with Ken Meter, local food systems analyst. Has done reports for regions all over N. America, including here in Illinois. Based in Minneapolis, Crossroads Resource Center.
August 1, 2022
4:00 PM Central
Hosted by U. of California, Merced

3. NATIONAL / GLOBAL

Video (75 mins.): Land & Water Protection
Rights of Nature discussed by three activists:
— Elizabeth Dunne, Earth Law Center
— Karen Coulter, Blue Mountains Biodiversity Project
— Markie Miller, Lake Erie Bill of Rights
Part of a recent 3-day event: A Radical Gathering (June 2022)
A most heartfelt thank you to Debbie Hillman for her Food Politics Corner contributions to the Wild Onion Market newsletter for well over a year. It’s been an important and interesting resource, highlighting significant news, events, and organizations working towards food justice – we hope to keep this section going. Debbie, your efforts have been very much appreciated!
