| But actually, El Shér is bringing heat to the snack aisle with Thai chillies, sweet paprika, turmeric, and pepper folded into these delicious and delicate treats. When we spoke with El Shér’s founder Sandeep—a Rogers Park local—he shared his love of the multitude of cuisines and communities that make up this neighborhood. His homage to them all is his little secret on the inside of the box, where “the lion” is written in Hindi, Korean, Ethiopian, Sinhalese, Chinese, and more.
El Shér means “the lion” and is a mash-up of Spanish and Hindi to honor its namesake—his oldest son Leon—who is growing up in a Mexican-Indian household. A perfectly delightful backstory for a superb cookie (maybe our new favorite snack?!). Dip one in your morning tea or coffee for a little heat to get the day going! |
Prickly on the Outside, Sweet on the Inside
|
| Wild Onion staff Brizeida and Michael showed us how to handle and cut the divinely juicy prickly pears (also called tunas) we have in season. They come in a vibrant range of oranges, greens, and magentas—but be careful when you pick them up, they have harmless and tiny prickly tines. They are the fruit of a cactus, afterall! |

| Wild Onion is in the middle of our capital campaign to ensure our long term sustainability as a community-owned grocery store. Now, we’re launching the next phase of our capital campaign with a focused goal: raising $25,000 by May 18 to support health care costs for our staff.
This goal is part of our broader $200,000 campaign to strengthen the store’s financial foundation, and we invite our community to help us get there! |

You’ve likely tried your hand at pickled radishes before, but maybe not daikons! Either way, we bet you’ve never pickled the watermelon and purple daikons we have in store. Kick up the heat with some peppers and spices and instantly amp up any meal! |
